Otters aim high at North West Regional Championships 2017
With one month to go before the qualifying window for National Championships closes, 8 of Carnforth’s senior swimmers went to Manchester to compete in the North West Regional Championships. With heats and finals in the same session it proved to be a busy time for the swimmers with 6 of them qualifying for the majority of finals in their entered events.
This year has undoubtedly been 15 year old Thomas Dugdale’s breakthrough
year. He achieved personal best times in all 4 of his events, winning
silver medals in the 50 and 100m Butterfly and is now well placed in the
national age group rankings. This means that Thomas will qualify for the
summer Nationals for the first time this year.
Robin Austin (16) swam PB’s to finish 5th in both the 50 and 100m Breaststroke. He will be hoping to improve his times just a little to make it to National Championships this summer.
Usually more of an open water swimmer 16 year old Ben Winterburn has improved his indoor pool times significantly this year. Competing in four Freestyle events (50/100/200/400m) he achieved personal bests in all 4 swims, clocking some impressive times and winning 2 bronze medals in the 200 and 400 Freestyle and a 4th place finish in the 100m.
As always it was great to see 16 year old Sadie Spencer competing and she had 2 good swims in the 50m Backstroke and 50m Freestyle, finishing 16th and 20th respectively.
Hannah Edwards (16) has also made great progress this year and is looking forward to qualifying for the National Championships for the first time in the Breaststroke events. She had some good swims across the weekend, qualifying for finals in all 3 events with her times right on her personal best.
16 year old Alex Livingstone is hoping to go to National Championships again this year in her specialty Backstroke events. Alex had good swims and reached the final in all events with times right on her personal best with her best place being 4th in the 200m Backstroke.
17 year old Emily Reay finished 27th in the 50m Freestyle.
Josh Thompson (19) had some excellent swims across the weekend, winning gold in every one of his five finals. Josh has now achieved a series of times which will qualify him for the National Championships in 200m Individual Medley as well as in Breaststroke and Freestyle events.
